Kaera couldn't remember ever being quiet so miserable. Ok, maybe that wasn't exactly true but she was quiet sure that whatever strange illness she'd caught was going to be the death of her. For the last week, she'd had trouble getting out of bed in order to head to work and this morning.. This morning she decided she wasn't even going to try. Her stomach simply wasn't up to the chore and all she wanted to do was curl back up against Banning and sleep.
Unfortunately, now that she was awake, her upset middle wasn't having any of it and it was with a feeling of impending doom that the petite blond shot from the bed and ran to the bathroom. Trying to be as quiet as possible in order to not disturb her mate, she fell to the floor and was horribly sick.
For long moments, she prayed for the Gods to put her out of her misery but then, as suddenly as it had come, the sickness passed and for a moment, she simply leaned against the cool tile and regained her strength. When she was finally able to move again, she rose and washed her face and hands before brushing her teeth and heading into the bedroom to pick up her phone. Hitting a number on speed dial, she quietly called her assistant to tell her she wouldn't be in that day and to cancel all her appointments for the day before hanging up and turning back to the bed.
As she did so, her expression immediately warmed to the sight of her love sprawled out all over the bed. Watching him for a moment, she couldn't help the silly smile that spread over her features. God, how she loved the man. From the tips of his stubborn, unruly blond curls to his stealthy warrior toes. He was everything she'd ever wanted and so much more and she was damned lucky to have him once more. She didn't know what miracle had brought him back into her life but she wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. A thousand years without him had been enough time to live a half life.
Stiffling another yawn, the tiny blond was just about to crawl back into bed when her mate rolled over and azure eyes opened to watch her. Smiling softly, she padded closer to the bed and then proceeded to sprawl against his chest in a limp heap as tiredness once again overwhelmed her.
"I think I'm going to play hooky today..."she murmered into his warm chest, curling close. "There are perks to being the boss, I suppose... Ones I've very seldom taken."

With a snuffle and a yawn, Banning came awake to the sounds of a toilet flushing, the pipes in the walls rattling softly. Lifting his head, he squinted into the darkness of the bedroom and let his arm swoop over the empty expanse of Kaera’s side of the bed. Was it time for her to leave for work already? An irritated hurrumph escaped him, as he peered over his shoulder at the bathroom door.
It had been so easy; falling into a comfortable routine with his mate. At first, things had been awkward, with his trying to learn a new language and remember certain facts from his past that had been wiped clean. He still had no memory of how he’d ended up in the new world, or how the human, Vincent Montegue, had found him…but he’d decided that none of it mattered.
Be it Gods, Fate, or the Romans’ Goddess of Love; someone had seen fit to bring him back to his wife, and for that, he was eternally grateful.
When Kaera left for work, it was usually time for him to get up and pay a visit to his brothers in arms. Brom and Erik were early risers, like himself, and would probably be bickering with one another in the kitchen. Eva, the newer addition to the mansion, had made it a habit to rise as early as the wolves and cook them their breakfast, before they headed out on patrol or to the club. Banning himself was still acclimating to the current world, and as such, he was relegated to accompanying Wulf, or playing the security expert for the Den grounds.
All in all…he was really starting to miss the old days. Sure, indoor plumbing, Xbox and refrigerators were gifts from the Gods, but that nagging feeling of being useless in some way seemed to dog his every step. He knew the others felt it- warriors in their own right, now forced to live quiet lives- but they seemed to know how to hide it. Sparring, war games, hunting rampant supernaturals intent on harming others; it was the new way to work off the itch to fight and still do something useful. But, even so, he felt a constant nag in his gut. As if…he were supposed to be doing something else, something much more important. And did he know what that was?
Of course not. Because that would be too damn easy.
Returning back to the present as his mate padded back into the room, Banning rolled over and propped his head on his arm. Gods, but she was beautiful, he thought as a loving smile fell over his lips. Memories of the wild child, following him around with impish taunts and remarks came to him, and he couldn’t help but snag a wrist and pull her closer to him. Even back then, at such an early age, he’d known that she was the girl for him. Forget the fact that her brothers, father and cousins were forces to be reckoned with; Kaera Fenrisulfr had always been meant for him. That much had been proven, with his return.
”And it is a shame that you don’t take them,” He said, choosing his English words wisely. His beautiful mate had been so patient in teaching him the language, that he chose every possible moment to practice it. ”But why is today so special? Are you ill, my love?”

There were some things in life that just never grew old and Banning's smile was one of those things. How often over the centuries had she woken to reach across her cold bed only to find it empty and mourn the thought of never seeing it again? How many nights had she laid sleepless upon these same sheets and silently cried herself into exhausted oblivion?
To many to count.
Resting against him, Kaera couldn't help but hold him tighter as those memories came back to haunt her. God, the thought of losing him again was enough to make the she-wolf inside snarl viciously. There was something that seemed to lurk in the back of her mind that his return was to good to be true but she refused to examine it. No need to look a gift horse in the mouth right? Surely his return was merely a gift of the gods, right?
Oh Aye, snorted the mocking voice in her soul, And the Devil gives snow cones in hell!
Pushing away that doubting Thomas, the little blond turned her attention back to her mate just as he spoke. Smiling a little she traced silly little hearts on his chest even as she yawned tiredly.
"I'm just a bit tired is all, mah love. I'm sure its just stress from work since we've been working on a few big mergers and my stomachs been queasy. It sometimes happens I suppose..." she said, frowning slightly even as she said the words. "Although its never happened to me..... Maybe I'm just working to much....."
Shaking her head, she drew away to look up at him and then leaned back against the pillows. Her brows were furrowed in thought but the sight of one lone curl sticking up on her mates head made her chuckle. Evidently, she'd been a bit ... enthusiastic last night from all appearances.
"What about you? What do you have planned for today? Anything pressing or can I keep you?"

Lying so easily next to her, Banning couldn’t help but allow a feeling of peace to wrap them up, as warm as any of the blankets around them. It was as if a bubble had surrounded them, protecting them from the dangers of the world. Right then, there was no imminent war with a demon world, or other trouble between his family. There was no one who threatened their way of life, no one who plotted against them. There was just the scent of roses and the warmth of the bed around them.
He could almost smell the world outside snarling to get in. There were so many things that they had to talk about; strategies to plan, conversations to have about whatever Wulf and the others that came up with. But he didn’t want to think about it, didn’t want to destroy the moment.
Dipping his head, he nuzzled the crook of her neck, taking a deep breath of her scent. Curling his body around him, he scowled at her reply. “You work too hard, love. I remember a time when it was my job to provide for you. You need rest. Tell the others who work for you that you’re being kidnapped by your husband.”
A playful expression fell onto his face then, as he surged up and loomed over her. Bracing his hands to either side of her, he smiled down at her fondly. “You have me for a lifetime. What did you have in mind?”
((Good lord, this was short. O.O It seemed so much longer in Word. >< ))
