"Holy cow! Is that your HOUSE?" Eva's eyes almost popped right out of her head, as Wulf pulled the Hummer down his driveway. When he'd said 'mansion,' she hadn't really thought anything of it; she'd been a bit distracted by the impending demon apocalypse and her scary-angry husband. But now that she was getting her first look at the place...holy cow! And choco cookies! It was HUGE!
Pulling back from the window, she rubbed at the small nose print and continued to stare as they finally stopped in front of the house. Hell, forget house; this thing was it's own state! It made her little apartment above the pizza place down the block from the diner look like a walk in closet.
Without waiting for him to say anything, she pushed open the car door and stepepd outside. Like a child, she craned her neck to look up at the very top of the roof and couldn't help the shocked smile she gave the tipsy top.
Oh, to have a house like this one. If the inside was as beatiful as the outside...hell, if the kitchen was as beautiful as the outside, she was never going to leave. For a moment, she forgot about everything. It was so darn easy to pretend that a charming man had whisked her off her feet and brought her to his personal...country.
"It's beautiful," She breathed, looking at a particularly colored window. She blinked, seeing a face staring down at her from it, but it was gone in a second. Okay, talk about the mood being broken. Crossing her arms over her chest, she cleared her throat a bit awkwardly and looked over at him again, an apologetic smile on her face.
"Sorry about that...I don't really get out much, as you can tell. You have a beautiful home. It's...really big. And so ornate. Are those carvings up on the rafters?"
In the time spent driving across town and then hitting the freeway to his family mansion, Wulf had never once given thought to what her reaction to it might be. To him, it was simply home and a place to lay his head down when he needed to rest. Sure, it was big but his clan was fairly good sized and they constantly had need of extra rooms when other shifters needed refugee. Her expression though... It made him pause and look up himself.
Wulf: What he saw was still his home but also a place that had become precious to him and his. It was a sanctuary and a place of peace in a land that was far from their homeland. In the backyard, there was even Scottish soil brought over for the simple joy of knowing it was there and ancient artifacts could be found everywhere inside.
"Aye, I suppose it is beautiful," he said, looking back at her and thinking that the same could be applied to the woman. "I built it a century ago when we first came to this land. It was wild and unsettled then and perfect for what we needed. My brothers and I bought up all the land around here and then built this house with our bare hands. Over the years, we've expanded and modernized it but the foundation is the same. Blood, sweat and phyiscal toil went into making this dwelling a home."
That said, he shook himself and headed for the door. With a quick glance behind to make sure she was following, the viking warlord beat a path up the sidewalk but was unsurprised when the door opened before he got there. Garrett, one of the family servents from way back greeted him with a bow that set Wulf's teeth on edge.
"Garrett, this is Eva.. She will be staying with us for a spell.. Please see to it that a room is prepared and that she is given anything that she desires." When the servent beamed a smile at his companion, the shifter relaxed a bit and then patted the old on the shoulder. "We will announce ourselves. See to your duties, ol' man."
When the servent nodded and eased away, Wulf turned back to the woman. "What would you like to do first? Rest? Eat? The house is yours to do with as you like... I"m afraid it will take some time for my men to gather and my sister is at the office. Her mate, Banning, should be about however so don't be scared if you see a tall, blond Celt running around that looks nothing like me. Hes the ugly one of the family"
She nodded, a dreamy expression on her face as she crossed her arms over her chest. "I remember those days," She said softly, lips curling softly as she pictured her homeland in all of its glory. "Things were so much quieter, then. More peaceful...even though wars were breaking out every other minute. It's different, isn't it? Now, compared to then."
Following him into the mansion, she had to stop and gawk at the foyer. Yup, it was official; she was never leaving. That whole 'box under his bed' thing was now a permanent thing. Running her fingertip over the rungs in the stairs as they passed, she hurried after him when she caught his inquisitive glance. Right; she could drool over fixtures another time.
But what she saw next, when she returned her attention back to the man in the foyer was definitely a surprise. The older man, obviously a servant by the way he was acting, seemed happy to see his 'master.' On the other hand, said boss seemed to be disliking the show, and Eva had to bite her lip to keep from smiling. The man did have that kind of aura; the one that made everyone around him stop what they were doing and take notice. He was just so...commanding, yet in a way that demanded respect. Hell, the first time she'd met him, she'd been half tempted to curtsey. And give his boo-boo a kiss.
She blinked as the thought skated through her mind, with 'and the other one too' right behind it. Wow...that was weird. She really didn't understand what was going on with her. Maybe it was his...animal magnitism? The fact that he was an actual knight in shining armor? Either way, she was feeling...strange around him. It had to stop.
With a big smile, Eva gave Garrett a little wave when she was introduced. A laugh escaped her at the mention of his brother-in-law, and she glanced up at the top of the stairs. Had that been the face she'd seen in the window outside? It had to be.
"I don't want to keep you, if you have matters to attend to yourself, sir," She said, once again feeling the urge to bow. Rubbing at her arms absently, she looked around them curiously.
"But if you have a moment...would you give me a little tour?"
She paused, then added. "We could talk while we walk, maybe. I could answer your questions now, instead of waiting for your associates. I might lose my nerve."
As introductions went, Wulf thought he was doing a very good job of showing how civilized he and his clan had become. There were no bones or carcasses laying on the front lawn and it was obvious that the butler took pride in keeping up the house. Still though, he couldn't keep himself from glancing around with unease as if skeletons would suddenly jump out of the closet or something. For some strange reason, it was important to him that this woman approve of his home and everything in it.
And that realization did NOTHING to his sense of well being.
Torn between the need to put as much distance as possible from her and himself and wanting to be as close to her as her own skin, the Viking warrior ran a hand through his long blond locks. He detested this feeling of limbo but he had no idea what to do about it. Something about her pulled at him and he knew even if he'd WANTED to... He couldn't have left her to fiend for herself. He was a man and she stirred desires that he'd thought long dead. The wolf inside was awake and it wanted her. Wanted her in ways that would probably send her screaming in the other direction as fast as her little feet could carry her.
That only made the predator inside smile. "Run, Little Red, Run"
it seemed to say.
When she turned those amazing eyes upon him again, it took Wulf a moment to bring his thoughts back to reality. He suspected that his eyes had partly shifted to wolf so he glanced away and cleared his throat a bit before answering. He should be getting back to work. He had a mess load of responsibilites and he didn't have time to be pandering to one little female. "Theres nothing pressing. I'd be happy to show you around." came the words out of his mouth and for a moment, he didn't even recognize them as his on.
Crap? Had he just said that? Then he heard himself continue.
"We can start on the east wing... Most company stays over there but you will be staying in the west wing. Its better protected with the family having rooms there." And my room is there and i want you near me at night so i can fantasize about what it would be like to feel you beneath me were the words that he finished with in his mind.
Son of a bitch. He was in so much trouble. If he was smart, he'd call Banning and turn Eva over to him to look after. Then again, he thought, glancing down at the woman... His best friend my just scare the hell out of the poor woman even worse. Kaera's mate was still... adjusting to this modern world.
"This way." he barked, his voice a bit crisp from his inner debates.
Without waiting to see if she would follow, Wulf prowled towards the ornate set of spiraling stairs that were built like something out of a castle keep and climbed them with a steady pace that he thought she could keep up with. "The downstairs area is full of parlors, dens, my office and other rooms set aside for meetings and such. The kitchen too is located on that floor. The second floor is for more guest rooms and most of the single bachelors. My brother Brom keeps a room here along with Tyreese for when he stays and another brother, Erik Kincaid. The third floor west wing is my sister Kaera and her mate, Bannings. We thought it wise to give them their own space after ... well, lets just say there are sides of Banning and my sister that I dont' need to see....." he tossed back, a little grin playing about his lips as he talked about his family. "My rooms are on the fourth floor also...."
Eva couldn't help but blink in surprise, when Wulf turned his face toward hers and she met a pair of slitted eyes, rather than the usual blue. Was he shifting? Did his kind have to do that on a daily basis, or something? Oh no, what if she'd upset him? And that was triggering some kind of change? A little flutter of panic started up in her chest for a moment, and she thanked Whoever for the opportunity to fan at her now reddened face when he turned away from her.
Deep breaths, Eva, she told herself with a mental shake. The big, intimidating Council Head was not about to eat her for lunch...though, the heat in those pale eyes told a different story. Had she imagined that, or...no, she wasn't going to think about it. Especially not now.
"I don't want to cause any trouble," She said automatically, while something inside her started to get warm again. She would be sleeping in the same wing as him...why did that seem to risque? And why did it conjur up the image of her sneaking into his bed? She just knew he'd have dark, satin sheets and a very large bed.
Giving herself a pinch, she let loose a strangled gasp/cough and pretended to pat her chest with a muttered 'dust.' When he started talking about the others living in the west wing, she couldn't help but smile. It was obvious that he cared a great deal about his family and she caught the way he subtely relaxed. A laugh escaped her as he mentioned his sister and her husband, and shook her head in amusement.
What would it be like, to have a family like his? She'd had one once, but it had been so long ago, she couldn't remember the feeling. Trying to keep up with his brisk stride, she clasped her hands in front of her and looked up and around the hall. "It sounds like your family is quite close. That's good; you don't normally see a lot of that, nowadays. You're a lucky man, Mr. Fenrisulfr."
Lucky. Yes, he was a very lucky man. He'd never really thought about it like that but what she said was true. He'd watched worthy men fall to enemy forces over his lifespan and he supposed that it was only by luck that he hadn't met some assassins blade. Luck, skill and wit. And some damned loyal men at his back. Men that were now family by luck and in some cases.. Birth. It gave him pause as he looked down at her and then waved her up the next flight of steps.
"Yes, indeed I am." he said thoughtfully."Time hasn't been without its casualties though. Of a large family, only myself, my brother Brom and my sister, Kaera yet thrive. Most of our clan is dead and buried and we've had to take up residence in a foreign land in order to keep our secrets. Modern technology has become a thing of beauty and of discomfort. People start getting suspicious after awhile when the same families die and come back looking so much like their ancestors that they could be identical twins. With things such as digital pictures and the internet... We've had to become adapt at hiding in plain sight without raising eyebrows."
Reaching the second floor landing, he paused briefly to consider before leading her down the east hall and opening various rooms so that she might see inside.
"These are the guest rooms. The servants keep them ready for emergencies and we've always got people popping in who are in need of a bit of rest. Although our home is generally not well known, we do have various... friends... who should up now and again. Our security, however, is top notch and it requires an act of a god to get in without one of the family letting you through the wards and gates. I'm sure you saw the gates we went through on the way here... We live on 500 acres of ground and we guard it well."
When they finished the tour of that wing, he lead her back down the hall to the west on and pointed out various taken rooms before reaching another set of stairs that lead upwards to the third and fourth floor. The third floor he skipped over with a vague. "Banning and Kaera's floor.... They have a bedroom, a den, an office for Kaera's work, and a huge game room for Banning. If you can not find one of the family on the other two floor... Theres a good chance that they are with my brother in law here... Just knock before you enter any door and you should be fine."
Wulf: That said, he lead Eva up the next set of stairs and into a a hall filled with deep mahagony wood and thick rich burgundy carpeting. "And this.. This is my suite. My bedroom is here..." he said, pushing open a heavy oak door and giving her a glimpse of the inner sanctum filled with deep, dark decadent tones that matched his inner male aura. A huge sleigh bed rested against the far wall and balcony doors were thrown open as if to ask in the sun. The light filtering in revealed the pure masculinity of the room and there were black silk sheets turned back on the bed.
When he mentioned the ones he'd lost, she couldn't help but reach out and give his arm a squeeze. She knew about that kind of loss; she'd never seen any of her family again, after being taken down to Sagan's realm. It had taken her almost fifty years to get back to earth, and when she'd had, she'd learned that time and war had ended her father's bloodline. There was just her...and she wasn't sure if said blood was as pure as it had been. Was she even still human?
The question rang in her head until it ached from it, and she was grateful when the shifter began speaking again. Letting her hand drop back to her front, she nodded in agreement when he spoke of the evils of the newer age. When they reached the guest bedrooms, Eva couldn't help but start to gawk again. Holy cow, each one of the rooms were the size of her apartment!
"I know I said it before, but...your house is amazing," She said, practically skipping after him as she took in the interior of his home. It was one thing that she particularly enjoyed during her excursions; witnessing the new buildings being put up. Call her strange, but architecture, both modern and old, fascinated her. And given the Fenrisulfr history, the mansion seemed to be a mixture of both the past and the present, and she couldn't help but drool over a few particularly intricate moldings. Oh, if only she had a camera!
...And maybe a box of tissues to wipe up some of that drool, she thought a few minutes later. How did she guess that he'd have black silk sheets and a large bed? For a minute there, she was confused as to why he was showing her his bedroom and the thought made her insides quiver excitedly. It was a very disturbing feeling, and the urge to turn around and flee was almost too much to withstand. But ignore it she did, instead crossing her arms over her chest and focusing on the wood moldings around the ceiling. That would take her mind off things, no problem!
"I think your bedroom is as big as my entire apartment," She said, forcing lightness into her voice, when all she wanted to do was turn around and run. Though, she had to wonder what his wolf would do, if it saw fleeing prey...
Giving her head a little shake, she forced her brain to remain in the present. Looking up at him, she forced a bright smile. "Somehow, I knew you'd have black sheets. It must be a man-thing. You said my room would be on the second floor?"
